Unique Irrigation
Irrigation is the lifeblood of the region and a network of storages, rivers, weirs and channel systems supplies the majority of the irrigation water all under the force of gravity. With rising energy costs and issues surrounding greenhouse emissions, an energy free system offers significant advantages for the region.
This advantage is exploited on the majority of farms who use boarder check irrigation to apply water to land that is all driven by gravity. Through the combination of whole farm plans, laser grading and water recycle systems, high water use efficiencies are able to be achieved.
The water released from the storages within the system are also used to generate electricity through hydroelectric power stations with a total installed generating capacity of 288 MW.
The irrigation system in Northern Victoria is undergoing the largest modernization program in Australia. Commenced in 2008, the project aims to upgrade aging infrastructure with an automated, efficient system.
