Growing the Murray Irrigation Region : Murray Dairy
Growing the Murray Irrigation Region
Dairy farming is a vital industry in the Murray Irrigation Limited (MIL) region. There are currently 80 dairy farms, representing 9% of all farm businesses in the region. These 80 dairy farms also purchase significant quantities of fodder and grain from broad acre farms in the region.
Murray Irrigation region dairy farms produce 202 million litres, 16% of the New South Wales milk production each year. This milk production is underpinned by around 88,000 megalitres of irrigation water or 25% of the MIL allocaton.
The Growing the Murray Irrigation Region project aims to realise a greater return from irrigation water and strengthen the regional economy by improving the capability and increasing capacity of the region's dairy farmers.
Key objectives include:
- Improving dairy farmer capacity to employ and manage labour
- Training and developing farm labour
- Increasing suppy of labour through promotion of the dairy industry and career pathways
- Promoting the benefits of working in the dairy industry in the Murray Irrigation Region
