Future Ready Dairy Systems

Future Ready Dairy Systems

How do farmers successfully cope with seasonal variability?

The Future Ready Dairy Systems project is aimed at demonstrating that there are viable, practical and profitable options for dairy farmers around seasonal variability and climatic challenges. The goal is to capture the lessons from farmers who have made changes to their farming systems so that other farmers can benefit from their experiences.

This project is investigating on-farm situations where strategies have been adopted that have allowed the farm to remain profitable despite the challenges they’ve faced. Areas may for example include; improving irrigation efficiency, minimising heat stress, fine tuning feedbase options & calving patterns, energy savings in the cow shed, or balancing these issues as part of business decisions.

Key outcomes for dairy farmers in the Murray Dairy region include:

  • Opportunities to engage in a range of activities including demonstration sites, field days, bus trips and information sessions delivering information focussed on issues relevant to farm operating environments.

  • Assessment and benchmarking of demonstration sites

  • Technical support for YDDP and farmer discussion groups to conduct activities within the project.
  • Professional development workshops for service providers and dairy farmers
